Brian Allen, an American-born trombone player, is a mysterious person. For example, "Synapse" (Braintone Records, 2005), which was improvised with top New York musicians such as Tony Malaby (saxophone) and Tom Rainey (drums), is a jazz-like free improvisation and is audible in that context.

But mystery isn't just about being a musician. He noticed that when he came to Japan in 2018. In the trio performance with Junji Hirose (saxophone) and Darren Moore (drums) at Ftarri of Suidobashi, the sound of the two resonates with the vibration unique to the trombone, and in the solo, the toys lined up on the floor and the trombone make a pleasant sound. Created a space. It was impressive that the two little girls who once taught the piano were watching it seriously. His sound is open to the outside.

Brian's "perisphorus" (2017) was an amazing piece. A muttering booklet that begins with "We drove Nada the other day. Nada, Texas. Neither Nada nor Nara in Japan." The DVD I put in was in an elongated envelope, which made me forget the time. The images are studded with crowds of Japan, Mexico, and the United States, rain-soaked car windows, wild mountains, and insects crawling on plants floating on the surface of the water. The sounds of musical instruments were layered.

This time, Brian has released the handmade set "Almanac" (2022) again. In a square book, an interview magazine "Luego Luego Magazine" (I was also interviewed as a writer), a collection of sound sources entitled "Fiends" (devil), a booklet "The Epistrophy" and an attached CD, sheet music " "Songbook", typography-like picture book "October" using the calendar of October 2022, collage art "Musica Hallada" using origami, branches and pieces of paper, and a set of video DVD and CD "Lyra I" It's packed with so many things that make you laugh.

"Fiends" is a collection of 26 songs since the 1990s. With so many, it's like a sound collage and you won't get tired of listening. Changing co-stars, Brian has been a part of the trombone, keyboards and drums all the time, so the sound is straightforward. A variety of things seem to make you feel the charm of the cloud-like sound of the trombone. Listen to Tom Kessler's refracting and rampaging guitar, master Roswell Rudd's voice, Natalia Perez's cello and trombone ensemble, and Fernando Alkayaga's organ that puts in and out the slamming sound elements. There are many places. Tom Kessler also enjoys talking about the difference in Berlin's noise compared to his hometown of Mexico in Luego Luego Magazine, and it's interesting that dialogue between mobiles can be realized in such a work. is. Natalia Perez talks about her beloved films, including her Kurosawa and Ozu, in the same magazine, and she also gives us an idea of improvisation and film perspectives. The back of the sleeve inside the booklet seems to resemble the design of the old Blue Note Records, which is fun.

In The Epistrophy, "Your voice is a cake" and "Your voice is a sake" (c is rewritten with a pen), dazzled by the strange phone text between Brian and Osiris. I'm happy with the words. The co-starring of David Burrow (trumpet) and Michael Formanek (bass) on the CD is a wonderful combination of playing in outer space and the superposition of acoustic sounds. When I was entrusted to the flow of the ensemble that concludes the end, I was surprised when an announcement from a Japanese station was suddenly inserted. After all it is not straightforward.
